This Saturday I'll be heading to Hamilton for the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market, with loads of dolls and brooches available for purchase :)

I'll also be running the Cactus Pin Cushion Workshop. Places are filled, but I will have ready made cacti available for purchase if you missed out.

There'll be stacks of other cool stalls too selling handmade goodies with a recycled, repurposed or vintage edge, plus you'll hear my dad singing to the crowds!

Yes it's Sunday and I'm doing a Saturday post. The world has gone all topsy turvy.

Do you like tofu? It's ok if you don't. I'm only starting to like it now that I'm eating more vegetarian food. I tried a tofu cheesecake at Fresh in Launceston and fell in love. I had to have more. So when I found a recipe for Chocolate and Tofu cheesecake, I decided to make it for the BrisStyle 'From Hobby To Wholesale' Information Session yesterday. It turned out a bit crumbly, but everyone seemed to like it (including my husband Tim, surprisingly!). Thank you Janella at Good Chef Bad Chef for the recipe. Chocolate and Tofu Cheesecake

Base

1 cup rice flour

1 cup almonds or hazelnuts

2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon of ground ginger

1 tablespoon of agave or maple syrup

1/3 cup sunflower oil or omega spread

1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

Pinch of salt

Filling

450g dairy free dark chocolate

180g silken tofu (not firm!)

30ml of strong instant coffee

1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

1/3 cup grated palm sugar (optional)

Heat oven to 160C and lightly grease a 20cm spring form pie tin with some sunflower oil or omega spread.

For the base, put the dry ingredients in a food processor and blitz until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Then add the wet ingredients and blitz again until it forms a ball. Press the mixture into the base and sides of the pie tin. Bake for 15 minutes then set aside.

Next, melt the chocolate and palm sugar in a bowl over a simmering pot of water. Let it cool a little, then blend in the tofu, coffee and vanilla. Pour on top of the cooked base and bake for another 20 minutes. Allow it to cool before taking out of pie tin. Serve with berries piled on top.

I've started reading Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach on my lunch break at work. It's such a blast from the past. Pip at Meet Me At Mike's talked me into reading it again with her Retro Readers club.

Today I learnt that centipedes don't always have 100 legs. They can have between 20 to 300. I wonder if they ever wish they had shoes. The centipede in James and the Giant Peach had 21 pairs!

Tomorrow I'll be working on a couple of custom orders I haven't had a chance to do lately. I'm quite excited. And there's a little sale happening in my Etsy store too this month.

Getting your hair done can be really fun. Especially when you get it coloured pink!

It's starting to turn a lot more of a fluro pink now that it's had a few washes. Not sure I can afford to do something this crazy again in a hurry, but it was a fun experience.

Did you know Nirvana's Nevermind album was released 20 years ago tomorrow?

I remember listening to Nirvana for the first time in the back seat of my sister's car. I think I was in grade 8. We were driving home from the city with Triple J on the radio, and Nirvana came on. I had never heard anything like it. It changed me. Like listening to The Beatles or Elvis for the first time.

Happy Roald Dahl Day!

Today is Roald Dahl Day, celebrating the birthday of my favourite author Roald Dahl.

Stuck in the spare bedroom studying information literacy, smuggling bits of chocolate from the lounge room, I'm wondering how one would celebrate his birthday (besides eating lots of chocolate). I decided to do a quick google search, and came across this excellent idea on making a Mr Twit beard. Complete with food stuck to it just like Roald Dahl's story 'The Twits'.

The below beard craft idea comes from Activity Village.

Dress yourself up as Mr Twit!

This is a fun activity and all you will need is an A4 sheet of brown craft foam or felt, some dried food such as cereals or beans, elastic, glue and scissors.

Cut out a beard shape, making a hole for the mouth. Snip the left over pieces of foam into small

strands and glue all over beard. Next glue on any food - cereal and dried peas look especially effective. Alternatively you may want to use paint (for example yellow to represent egg yolk or red for tomato ketchup).

When dry, fasten elastic to beard and wear with pride!

This year is also the 50th anniversary of James and the Giant Peach. So go make some peach crumble. Or peach schnapps could be nice too.

Yesterday I found out I was featured in Queensland newspaper The Sunday Mail.

I knew I'd be in there at some stage very soon after having some photos and interviews, I just didn't realise it would be this soon and woke to a very lovely surprise!

Today was National Bookshop Day, celebrating bookshops small and large. Tim and I walked from home to Oxford St in training for Bridge to Brisbane, and I just really wanted to visit Riverbend Books :)

Bookshops are quaint little places, and I find it much nicer to read from a physical book than an eBook personally. I really do keep fingers and toes crossed for my favourite bookshops to keep thriving, like Riverbend Books and Avid Reader.

I like cats. Almost as much as Lee Junghoon does. I follow this person on Instagram, and the photos that keep coming through keep me amused.

I've been a little quiet on the sewing table lately trying to finish some uni assignments. But here's something I'm working on - brooches.

I'll have some Einstein brooches at the Valley Laneway Markets tomorrow. And the Young Designer Markets at Southbank on Sunday. Come get one, and stick some brains on your collar. Yay.

This week my husband and I realised we've been together for 13 years. I found that quite amazing, and thought I'd do a post to celebrate with the number 13.

Our first proper date was on Tuesday 28 July 1998, and we saw City Of Angels at the Regent Cinema in Brisbane. We were going to go on the Sunday night, but getting there seemed a logistical nightmare with Clarks buses and trains getting a Logan girl and a Jindalee boy into the city. So we changed it to Tuesday and my friend Linda came over instead, and I called Tim constantly in a very tipsy state all night.

The Regent is sadly being demolished this year to make way for yet another high-rise office tower.

Friday I'm in Love

I introduced my brother to James Dean with one of my favourite films this week - Rebel Without A Cause. An absolute classic with more emotional teenage angst in it than all of Nirvana's songs combined.

After watching it, I starting thinking I'd really like to make a James Dean softie. And a Natalie Wood. And a Rock Hudson. They can have some crazy little 1950's style reunion in our living room.

I best switch my brain off now and get some shut eye. I'm zooming over to Hamilton in the morning for the next BrisStyle Info Session on Smart Marketing with Sarah Rossiter. Should be awesome. I'll keep you posted on the James Dean softie.

Here is my latest creation. The dude from The Cure, Robert Smith.

I don't normally put mouths on my dolls, but this one had to have Robert's famous red lipstick smear. His canvas reads 'Robert Smith wasn't a goth, he just looked really good in black. So good it made him cry'.

I love him dearly. He is now being wrapped up ready to go to his new owner.

I love comedians. There, I said it. I've seen a few, though there's still a lot more I haven't seen that I want to see.

I missed seeing Tim Minchin earlier in the year as I was totally unorganised with getting tickets, and now resort to watching him on YouTube. Ho hum. Here is a clip for those unfamiliar with him.

This Friday I'm in love with Carry Nation.

Have you heard of Carry Nation? They are Jessie Warren on vocals and guitar and Nick (backup vocals and guitar), Kirstie (cello) and Matt (trumpet and piano accordion). Carry Nation are a Brisbane band unearthed on JJJ, with a top album released this year 'Like A River Does'.

They will be performing at the Valley Laneway Markets in Winn Lane this Saturday. And I'll have a market stall there to enjoy the music all day long. Radness.

Tuesday Trivia

Tuesday night is trivia night for us.

We go to the club with my family and try to answer as many questions as we can on general knowledge and stuff. I'm ok at movies, Aidan is excellent at music and Tim's best at science. An added bonus is we don't have to cook - woot.

The Toy Society

Have you heard of The Toy Society?

It's a project that started in Australia in 2008, with its aim to spread love throughout the world.

Toy crafters can make a soft toy and then hide it for someone else to find and keep. The crafter's toy drop is mentioned on The Toy Society blog, and when it is found the lucky recipient can notify The Toy Society.

But they don't have to, as The Toy Society is about giving something and expecting nothing in return. I don't think I could stop myself though if I found one of the softies - they are so cute!!

BrisStyle is taking part in The Toy Society project too. Check out their post here for details on how to participate in the toy drop, and various BrisStylers will be mentioned throughout May on the BrisStyle blog too.

Hello Friday. I love you. Just like I love these few things.

1. Chocolate hot cross buns. Holy shit yes. As if hot cross buns weren't scrummy enough, someone decided to put chocolate inside them. I found some in the local supermarket the other night, and decided I have to make some very soon as I like them very much. I'm going to try this recipe out very soon and throw a truckload of chocolate bits in it.

2. I love this Massive Attack filmclip for Teardrop. An oldie, but lovely and calming.

3. People that know Tim and I well will know we like our gin. This tea towel by Dear Colleen is perfect for our kitchen.

4. A very good friend of mine made me a delightful scarf. And arm warmers. They are very pretty and warm. She's in the process of opening up an Etsy store, I'll give more details (and photos) soon!

This Friday I'm in love with a few things.

1. It was St Patrick's Day yesterday, and this little clip cheered me up. The Muppets version of Danny Boy.

2. Gone Dotti. Megan's store in Paddington, QLD will sadly be closing down next Thursday. But on a high note, you can visit her Etsy shop online and purchase her creative treasures, like these awesome eye chart brooches (pictured above). And you can still visit her shop on Latrobe St - go here for address and hours. But it's limited stock folks, and she'll only be open till next Thursday.

3. Peppermint Magazine. This gorgeous Brisbane mag, with it's focus on sustainable fashion and lifestyle, is no Women's Weekly. Plus Peppermint's editor Kelley Sheenan is in the running for WWF Earth Hour People's Choice Awards. Vote for her here.

4. Mixtape zine. I've collected a few of these, and was sad to hear they've stopped running now. Don't despair though, there's still a few copies left of this awesome little craft/lifestyle magazine here.

Meat-free Monday

Tonight we cooked up curried vegan sausages with mashed potato. It was very nice. One of my favourite easy meals.

All you need is a pack of vegan sausages (we used Sanitarium ones), an onion chopped finely, a carrot chopped finely, two diced potatoes, curried sausages packet mix (we used Continental brand) and some tomato sauce.

Fry the sausages in some oil, then cut up into thirds in the pan and fry onion and carrot in with it. Blend the packet mix with a cup of water and a couple of tablespoons of tomato sauce. Pour this mix in the pan and let it simmer. Boil the potatoes, and then mash em up with some butter and milk. Serve the mash with the sausage mix and an ice cold beverage (in our case, a G&T).

Yep, this is all you need to do. Nice.

Friday I'm in Love

Hello again! It's Friday once more, and these are a few things I really loved this week.

1. Mel Buttle. We saw her show Buttle and Buttle on Tuesday night at the Brisbane Powerhouse, and it was excellent. If you like Judith Lucy, you'll love Mel Buttle. She'll be on until March 13th. Go book a seat now. Yes, now.

2. I love nerds, craft and Autumn. This doll completes me. Lots more lovely, cute dolls, brooches and other cool things too in Cat Rabbit.

3. Kristian Fletcher's scary movie nights. We went to the Horror Triple Feature at The Globe last Sunday night (Carrie, Child's Play and Night of the Living Dead) and it was awesome. His next scary movie event is at Tribal Theatre with Evil Dead and Fright Night Thursday 31/03. The Rocky Horror Picture Show nights are a must see too, with his group Cards For Sorrow re-enacting the show while the movie plays.

4. This Triple J Like A Version cover of 99 Problems by Philadelphia Grand Jury put me in a happy mood this week. Thank you, and thank you Triple J. Could contain bad words, so be careful.

5. These sleeper cells by Suzanne Husky are very nice. They remind me of the huts in Where The Wild Things Are.

Last Monday was Tim's birthday. We had planned to go to Breakfast Creek Hotel for dinner, but a huge storm got in the way. We had no electricity when we got home from work, so had to dry and iron our clothes for Tuesday at my sister's place. While we waited for them to dry, we ducked down to Ceylon Inn at Bulimba for tea. I picked a vegetarian assortment platter. It was a bit too big for me.

It's Friday, and I'm in luuurve.

1. Benjamin Law. The first time I read anything from Benjamin Law was his review on different brands of toilet paper. It was the funniest thing I'd read in a Frankie magazine. If you don't know who I'm talking about, go get a Frankie. He's also written a book - The Family Law. I'm putting this on my wishlist.

2. Lovin' the human spirit. The Handmade Expo have got together with an idea to help flood victims that love to craft and have lost everything - the Re-Stash Craft Appeal. Head to the Handmade Expo this Saturday 19th February with any crafty supplies you would like to donate, and it will be available to those that need it the following week at Mimmi's and Handmade Heaven.

3. These stickers could be used anywhere. On your sandwich. On the bird cage. On your forehead while you're on the phone. Lots of other crazy stickers in her shop too. Love.

4. Peanut butter. I could eat it from the jar. As that's not terribly lady-like, I'm going to try making these muesli bars. Wonder if they'll fit in the jar...

5. We saw Ball Park Music at the Hi Fi bar in West End last Monday. They rocked. Here's one of my favourites. Be warned - it does have some offensive language.

Oh, hello Friday. You have come round quickly for once which is very nice.

Today I'm in love with lots of things. So many I've decided to make a list. I think I'll do this for Fridays from now on.

1. Nutella. You can have it on bread, toast, biscuits - heck, even on it's own. People around the world love it so much that tomorrow is World Nutella Day. It's also National Chocolate Fondue Day. So hit two birds with the one stone and dip strawberries in that Nutella jar.

2. Stephen Fry reading Harry Potter to me in the car. Driving to work will never be the same again thanks to audio books.

3. Lullaby by The Cure, and Robert Smith's story about being eaten by Spiderman. Love it.

4. These cups from Emerald Flare are pretty damn cute.

5. Going to the beach with my lovely husband Tim (pictured above).

Tony Abbott and The Premier's Flood Relief Appeal

Are you a fan of politics? I'm not, but that didn't stop me turning some politicians into softies.

Even more awesome - my Tony Abbott softie is in the BrisStyle Handmade Ark Appeal on Etsy.com, and when he's sold the money will go towards The Premier's Flood Relief Appeal. The appeal has also been extended today to help those affected by tropical cyclone Yasi.

I hear you. Tony isn't my cup of tea either. If that's the case, maybe he could be a pin cushion instead...

Hold on tight Queensland

If you're in Australia right now, you've most likely seen or heard on the news that northern Queensland is being hit now by tropical cyclone Yasi. It's also predicted to be the largest tropical storm to hit the country. Below is a picture I found on www.couriermail.com.au which shows how big TC Yasi would be if it were hovering over America right now.

Sitting inside ready for bed, I'm thinking of family and friends up north in this terrible nightmare. Hope everyone stays safe.

My mum used to make beef stroganoff when I was younger. I think it was just packet mix style, not from scratch. I loved it, but I hated how the bits of beef would get stuck in your teeth.

You might find this weird, but I like making mine with tofu. Tim still gets his with beef - that's cool with me. I put capsicum in it too to add a bit of colour.

The QLD floods have been on the news 24/7 the past couple of weeks, and people all around the world have been helping in whatever way they can with donations and volunteer work.

The amount of help that has come in is truly amazing. Astonishing even.

One person that's supporting Queenslanders in this time of need is Hayley from REread in Brisbane. Sales that she makes from a selection of brooches, like the chicken above, go directly to the Premiers Flood Relief Appeal as part of the BrisStyle Handmade Ark.

And for those people sick of the generic 'Hallmark' cards, Hayley also makes quirky cards like these.

Queensland has been devastated by massive floods this year. Floods we haven't seen since 1974. Over 200,000 people have been affected. At least 70 towns were flooded. Three quarters of the state was declared a disaster zone.

Yet even in these hard times, when all seems lost, there still appears some hope for those affected. Please help out where you can so we can make this state beautiful again.

Fridays are lovely. Today is New Year's Eve, and I am spending it at home thinking about the year that has just passed, and what might eventuate next year. As most people probably do on New Year's Eve.

Rain, rain, go away....

Yes, it's raining in Brisbane. A lot.

Rainy markets are quite scary sometimes, especially when you're not prepared (like us). So I'm making a checklist of things we MUST do and pack before the next market. And what's the first thing on that list? Marquee weights!! Don't want my marquee going up again, no sir-ee. How freakin' scary!!

Oh well, all you can do is laugh at the end of the day. Thank you everyone that helped us out on Saturday at the BrisStyle Indie Designer's Market. The speedy race with all our stock into the hall kitchen was brilliant, and nothing got damaged which is pretty awesome too! Fingers crossed the weather clears and brings on a dazzling night for the BrisStyle Indie Twilight Market in King George Square, Brisbane - 17 December. Very much looking forward to it.

See. I told you I'd be back.

Today I'd like to share with you a funky place called Flamingo Cafe. It's behind The Zoo at 5B Winn St, Fortitude Valley. The Flamingo Cafe made me breakfast and lunch yesterday while we had our Valley Laneway Markets stall. I highly recommend the corn bread with avocado. It totally rocked. As did the Mars bar chocolate crackle. Holy shit yes.

We tried to recreate the avocado on toast tonight, but substituting the corn bread for white bread totally failed.

Oh and if you visit Flamingo Cafe, make sure to visit Little Jane St too. They are just two seconds away, and have the cutest little shop with cards, magnets, paper decorations, plus Frankie's new book Spaces (amongst their numerous other books).

Ok best get myself to bed now. I shall be having sweet dreams of chocolate crackles.

I know, I know. I've neglected my blog again. I'm very sorry.

Today I'd like to introduce you to the Sydney now Brisbane gal Liana Kabel. I am totally in love with her jewellery, which she makes from all kinds of plastic bits. My favourite would be the knitting needle bangles.

I ran into Liana recently at Finders Keepers in Brisbane, and picked up one of these little Tupperware Lady brooches too. I'm still pondering whether to keep it or not. It was meant to be a Christmas present....

Halloween Down Under

We had zombies walking through Brisbane on Sunday 24th October. Did you take part? Was it fun? We're thinking we'll have a go next year, as we found out about it a little too late to register. It was awesome fun though getting to see everyone taking part!

Our zombies went for a bit of a walk too.

I love my shot in black and white. I think it could work for a postcard.

We managed to go trick or treating too, and dressed as the scariest things we could think of. Or what we could put together that was scary-ish.

Today I'm in love with the pretty brooches made by Jess at Good Boy Cracky.

Jess likes to use recycled materials to create a greener planet. She will take something old and make it new again, and give the item a second life.

Softie Workshop

I have some rather exciting news to tell.

Wicked Child Designs will not only be selling softies at the BrisStyle Indie Eco Market in Hamilton on Saturday 6th of November, but running a softie workshop too!

Our workshop at Redland City Council's Capalaba Library early this year proved to be very successful, and I have decided to run another because it's just so lovely meeting you all at the same time!

I will be on hand to provide help with constructing a basic softie, and all the materials will be provided on the day so you can have it finished to take home. You can then keep it for yourself, give it to someone for Xmas, or even donate it to Softies For Mirabel!

This Friday I'm in love with the funky beads from Strat Designs, a Brisbane small business run by Sophie Straton-Ferrier.

Sophie loves making jewellery that is eye-catching, colourful and quirky to brighten a lady's day.

Hey there. It's been a while...

Hello lovelies!

I'd say possums, but I've had a few too many close encounters with real possums this week that the term possum here brings back bad memories. Yes they're cute, but they totally freak me out! Not to mention my poor budgie when they jump on his cage. We shall have to investigate how to keep our crazy intruders away safely before we go mental.

Mr Wicked and I have had a lovely holiday from work, and are now back in business. We actually went to Taipei, which was awesome fun. We're thinking our next trip shall have to be Japan. Or maybe Sweden. Or both :)

Anyways, I better get back into my sewing. I am making lots of scary zombies at present (hey it's almost Halloween!) and finger puppets. And finishing off lots of custom orders for you cool peeps.

Oh and before I forget, our next market is this Saturday 23rd October at St Margaret's Anglican Girls School in Ascot. It's the Mayo 2010 Arts Festival, and we're there from 10am till 5pm.

Meat-free Monday

I'm not a huge meat fan. I used to eat meat, yes, but for about a year now I've kinda gone off it. I've started to cook more vegetarian meals lately, which is difficult when you have a husband that prefers his meal still, well, mooing.

Mr Wicked was very happy tonight. Bean nachos was on the menu, his favourite, from the cookbook Martha Goes Green. We added corn to it, which is really nice, but a little too much chilli.... Still, it was very yum. Mr Wicked has lunch tomorrow now too.

Yep, another week has flown and it's Friday already.

This Friday I'm lovin' Trixie Delicious. They reuse old cups, saucers and plates by painting them with funny and often rude words.

I love this one. I think I'd use it at work.

One of these days, I will put in a post on a different day. Yes I will. The days seem to fly so quickly lately, it's like it's Friday everyday. Wouldn't that be lovely though?!

This Friday I am super in love with Moose and Bird. In fact I have been for a long time. It just takes me a little while to process these thoughts out loud.

Moose and Bird is run by the talented little lady Melinda Hume. She makes the cutest pear cushions, like the one pictured below.

Spring has sprung, and we're super duper excited to be at the BrisStyle Indie Designer Markets tomorrow.
